Equity research: group Inditex
A company valuation is a complex process that requires a rich set of assumptions from the analyst – understanding the mechanisms behind valuation is crucial to make value-added decisions. The aim of this thesis is to value Inditex, one of the world´s largest fashion retailers. For this end, different valuation methodologies are described, used and compared, (the reasons concerning them will be explained), combining the academic approach with the most used practices in the valuation market. The equivalence between different discounted cash flow methods (such as the weighted average cost of capital, the adjusted present value, and the flow to equity) is an element of pedagogical interest in this master’s final work. Finally, the valuation result obtained will be subject to sensitivity analysis, to comparison with the traded market value, and comparison with the results obtained from a well-known Portuguese investment bank (Banco Português de Investimento), evidencing the main differences between both analysis.III

II.
Influence of Ferredoxin, Iron-Sulfur Carrier and Cobalamin Importer Overexpression on the Production of High-value Products by Escherichia coli
"One of the problems in antibiotics production is the difficulty of their synthesis or low yield
in the case of complex biological molecules. They have complex biosynthetic pathways, where
cobalamin-dependent SAM enzymes play a pivotal role, with an Fe-S cluster in their structure and
the necessity of secondary electron transfer proteins for their activity, making the production
improvement difficult. An example of these compounds are fosfomycin (Fom3 enzyme), a broadspectrum
antibiotic, and thiostrepton (TsrM enzyme), a Gram-positive antibiotic with anticancer
properties, both naturally produced by Streptomyces sp..(...)
VR Lab: User Interaction in Virtual Environments using Space and Time Morphing
Virtual Reality (VR) allows exploring changes in space and time that would otherwise
be difficult to simulate in the real world. It becomes possible to transform the virtual
world by increasing or diminishing distances or playing with time delays. Analysing the
adaptability of users to different space-time conditions allows studying human perception
and finding the right combination of interaction paradigms.
Different methods have been proposed in the literature to offer users intuitive techniques
for navigating wide virtual spaces, even if restricted to small physical play areas.
Other studies investigate latency tolerance, suggesting humans’ inability to detect slight
discrepancies between visual and proprioceptive sensory information. These studies
contribute valuable insights for designing immersive virtual experiences and interaction
techniques suitable for each task.
This dissertation presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a tangible
VR Lab where spatiotemporal morphing scenarios can be studied. As a case study, we
restricted the scope of the research to three spatial morphing scenarios and one temporal
morphing scenario. The spatial morphing scenarios compared Euclidean and hyperbolic
geometries, studied size discordance between physical and virtual objects, and the representation
of hands in VR. The temporal morphing scenario investigated from what
visual delay the task performance is affected. The users’ adaptability to the different
spatiotemporal conditions was assessed based on task completion time, questionnaires,
and observed behaviours.
The results revealed significant differences between Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces.
They also showed a preference for handling virtual and physical objects with concordant
sizes, without any virtual representation of the hands. Although task performance was
affected from 200 ms onwards, participants considered the ease of the task to be affected
only from 500 ms visual delay onwards.
Outros estudos investigam a tolerância à latência, sugerindo
A adaptabilidade
Fibrous braided stents with antibacterial properties
Tese de Doutoramento (Programa Doutoral em Engenharia Biomédica)Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases are reported as a major cause of death and disability in
developed countries. Therefore, stents have emerged as a solution to overcome this problem.
However, common commercialize stents, are metallic, which present several disadvantages as
corrosion, higher risk of restenosis and infection. In order to minimize the disadvantages associated
with these stents, new materials, like fibrous materials, have begun to be used as well as surface
modifications of biomaterials begun to be applied, in order to avoid those drawbacks, especially
infection. Therefore, the main objective of this work was the development of a fibrous stent, able
to compete with the mechanical properties of the commercial ones, with the advantaged of being
coated with an antibacterial agent, able to avoid infections.
For this purpose, braided stents were produced by varying materials, structural and process
parameters, such as monofilament type and diameter, braiding angle and mandrel diameter. The
influence of these design parameters on mechanical behavior, as well as stent's porosity, was
thoroughly investigated, and suitable parameters were selected for developing a stent with
mechanical characteristics and porosity matching with the commercial stents. According to the
experimental results, suitable performance was achieved with a polyester stent designed with:
monofilament diameter of 270 µm, braiding angle of 35°; and mandrel diameter of 6 mm,
providing similar properties to commercial Nitinol stents (porosity above 70%, unchanged diameter
during bending tests above 75%, force for longitudinal compression between [0.16-5.28] N and
force for radial compression between [1.13-2.90] N).
After the stent’s development, silver and silver oxide thin films were deposited by non-reactive and
reactive pulsed dc magnetron sputtering. The coatings were characterized chemical, physical and
structurally. This first approach in stent’s functionalization revealed that silver thin film formed a
continuous layer, while silver oxide layer was composed of islands with hundreds of nanometers
surrounded by small nanoparticles with tens of nanometers. In order to verify the antibacterial
behavior of the coatings, halo inhibition zone tests were realized for Staphylococcus epidermidis
and Staphylococcus aureus. Silver coatings did not show antibacterial behavior, contrarily to silver
oxide coatings, which presented antibacterial properties against the studied bacteria. The presence
of silver oxide phase along with the development of different morphology were pointed as the main
factors in the origin of the antibacterial effect found in silver oxide thin film. With the purpose of understand the influence of oxygen species in the physical, chemical and
structural properties of thin films new silver and silver oxide thin films were deposited, by nonreactive
and reactive pulsed dc magnetron sputtering, with the variation of oxygen content. The
resulted coatings revealed that silver coating forms a continuous layer. The incorporation of oxygen
leads to the formation of a mixture of Ag2O + AgO phases. However, with the increase of the oxygen
fraction, the mixture of oxides disappear and the resultant thin film became only AgO.
Cytotoxicity tests were performed, demonstrating that in the silver oxide coating no cytotoxicity was
found, making this coating able to be used in stents applications.
The antibacterial behavior of coatings was, quantitatively, tested against Staphylococcus epidermis,
showing that AgxO unlike Ag coating presented antibacterial behavior. The presence of silver oxide
is the main reason for the antibacterial effect, probably due to the increased production of reactive
oxygen species (ROS).
Finally, and in order to evaluate the coating’s behavior when subjected to mechanical forces, coated
silver and silver oxide stents were, again, mechanically tested, and no loss of adhesion or
delamination were observed, indicating that coatings will support, adequately, the mechanical
forces and the dangerous of delivering parts of coating in blood current will not occur.
In conclusion, fibrous stents coated with silver oxide, present a good mechanical behavior, when
compared with nitinol commercial stents, possess antibacterial properties and are no cytotoxic,
which made this stent a promising candidate as a biomaterial and a viable substitute to metallic
stents.
A influência destes parâmetros no
propriedades antibacterianas contra as bactérias estudadas.
Representation matters: LGBTQI+ representation in brands’ advertising
Nowadays, diversity is a major component of competitive advantage for brands, and so they incorporate social messages such as LGBTQIA+ equality into their advertising, as a means of differentiation. Moreover, the LGBTQIA+ market is currently estimated to be worth $18 trillion globally. Hence, the main goal of this dissertation is to explore how LGBTQIA+ consumers respond to brands’ LGBTQIA+ representation in advertising. In order to do so, as this is a qualitative study, 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted, making use of a diverse sample of LGBTQIA+ consumers. Data was analyzed using Bardin’s Content Analysis technique. Results show that there is still a lack of diverse and inclusive LGBTQIA+ representation in advertising and that actually appeals to this group of consumers. Additionally, brands must make a whole-hearted long-term effort to the LGBTQIA+ community, not only in their advertising but also as one of their core values. Finally, various recommendations are given to companies for them to become truly LGBTQIA+ friendly
Thermotropic Mesomorphism of a Model System for the Plant Epicuticular Wax Layer
As a model for the epicuticular wax layer of plant cuticular membranes, we have studied the phase behavior of
1-tetradecanol and 1-octadecanol and their binary mixtures between 5 and 70°C, using differential scanning calorimetry and
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Both pure compounds show two exothermic phase transitions corresponding
to a transformation from a liquid phase to a hexagonally packed solid phase (SHEX), which at lower temperatures transforms
to an orthorhombically-packed solid phase (SORT). On heating the SORT solid a single endothermic transition with a transition
enthalpy corresponding to the sum of the exothermic transition enthalpies is obtained. These transitions were also followed
using FTIR spectroscopy in the CH2-stretching (symmetric and asymmetric) and CH2-rocking vibration modes. The FTIR
spectra of the pure compounds in the liquid, SHEX, and SORT phases were used to simulate experimental spectra in the phase
transition regions. The simulations allowed us to estimate the molar fractions of each phase in the transition regions of the
pure compounds. A phase diagram for the binary mixture of 1-tetradecanol and 1-octadecanol was obtained using differential
scanning calorimetry and FTIR. FTIR studies on binary mixtures prepared from one perdeuterated component and the other
nondeuterated permitted studying the thermotropic behavior of each component in the mixture independently. The mixture
shows an eutectic behavior with an eutectic point between a molar fraction of octadecanol (X18) of 0.12 and 0.18 and a
temperature of 32°C. Below 32°C, a binary mixture of solid phases, one an SORT phase and the other an SHEX phase, coexist
up to 25°C, below which both solid phases are SORT phases. We discuss the possible relevance of this complex phase
behavior in a simple binary mixture of two long-chain alkanols in the context of the far more complex phase behavior expected
for the plant epicuticular wax layerinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Nitrate content in vegetables and fruits consumed throughout the year in Portugal
No
projeto Total Diet Study Exposure (TDS-Exposure).
Nitrates compounds are common in nature and widely found in foods,
